Nolan Arenado feels ‘disrespected’ by Rockies

Must Read

It seems not all is well in Colorado.

Hours after Rockies general manager Jeff Birdich indicated he won’t be trading third baseman Nolan Arenado, the five-time All-Star said he feels “disrespected” by the organization.

“I really don’t care what’s being said,” Arenado told The Denver Post. “I just know that I feel disrespected over there.”

The source of Arenado’s discontent isn’t clear, but he told MLB.com it’s not the surprising trade rumors that cropped up during the winter meetings, nor apparently Birdich’s quashing of them Monday.

“There’s a lot of disrespect from people there that I don’t want to be a part of,” he said in a text.

It’s a relatively quick souring of the relationship; Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million contract extension with the Rockies in Feb. 2019. In September, though, he told The Athletic the state of the organization “feels like a rebuild.”

Entering his age-29 season, the seven-time Gold Glove and five-time Silver Slugger winner seems likely to miss the postseason for a second straight year in a competitive NL West.

That is, if he finishes the season in Colorado — the Rockies are reportedly still open to a midseason trade, depending on how the season plays out.
